Romanee Conti, Vosne-Romanee, Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine.

Romanee-Conti is one of the grand cru appellation vineyards in the commune of Vosne-Romanee in Cote de Nuits in Bourgogne. It is a monopole (fully owned) by the Domaine de la Romanee Conti, sometimes called DRC. It is planted exclusively with pinot noir grapes to make red wine. Not just any red wine, but one of the most expensive ones you can find.

The Romanee-Conti grand cru is just one of several around the village of Vosne Romanee. When standing looking at the stone cross on the edge of Romanee Conti you have La Grande Rue to the left, on the other side of a dirt road, behind you is Romanee Saint Vivant, above RC up the hill is La Romanee, and to you right (north) is Richebourg.

The total vineyard area is 1.63 hectares. Yields are low, much less than 30 hl/ha according to some, a bit over 40 hl/ha according to others, so there are not many bottles around, only some 4000-5000 bottles. But that is of course not the main reason that makes the wines from this vineyard one of the world's most expensive red wines. That is mainly du to its collectability and to the desire that well heeled people have to own a bottle that says Romanee-Conti on the label, and perhaps, perhaps even one day drink it. It is more of a collector's item than a beverage.

The vineyard is cultivated with organic farming since 1985.

But why there is a tall stone cross standing at the edge of the vineyard I do not know. It was erected in 1723, according to the inscription (which also says "Pierre Argo"), re-erected by the Gaudin de la Villaine and Leroy (at one time co-owners of the vineyard).

A bit too early yet but the poppies will soon be in the vineyards (Cornas, Rhone)

Cornas village and wine region, Rhône, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine.

THIS IS ONLY A SELECTION OF SAMPLES. Use the image SEARCH function to find more relevant photos.

Cornas is a small appellation (AOC / AOP) in the northern Rhône Valley in France. It is the least known and southern-most of the three “great” wine districts in northern Rhone: Côte Rôtie, Hermitage and Cornas. This small wine region centres around a small rural village called … Cornas.

The Cornas wine appellation is entirely dedicated to red wines made exclusively from the syrah grape. Syrah is by far the most important red quality grape in the northern Rhone, also exclusively used in Cote Rotie and dominant in Hermitage. It has recently risen from being the little nondescript cousin of the other two great appellation into standing virtually on par with them, producing wines of great distinction and quality. (Perhaps that had to do with the cousins becoming terribly expensive and consumer looking for more affordable alternatives?)

The entire Cornas wine district covers only a mere 90 hectares, smaller than some Bordeaux chateaux. All the vineyards are located on the slopes behind the village; quite steep slopes sometimes, some vineyards are even terraced.

Today the wines from Cornas are no longer cheap, but they often represent very good value for money. The traditional style with sometimes excessive and very hard tannins has in most cases given way to a wine style more based on balanced and ripe fruit with a strong underlying tannin structure.

No longer for sale. Bought by one of France's richest (Condrieu and Chateau Grillet, Rhone)

The Chateau Grillet, that has its own appellation close to Condrieu with its vineyard behind. Château Grillet, Vérin, Rhone, France, Europe

-

Condrieu and Château Grillet, Rhône, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine.

THIS IS ONLY A SELECTION OF SAMPLES. Use the image SEARCH function to find more relevant photos.

Condrieu and Chateau Grillet are two small white wine appellations in the northern Rhone Valley in France. They both make exclusively white wines from the unusual, bet recently somewhat trendy grape variety called Viognier.

In the mid-1900th century viognier was on the verge of becoming extinct. A few enthusiastic growers in the northern Rhone did persist in growing, notably George Vernay and a few others. In time, no doubt helped by the excellent wines they made, the grape was “rediscovered” by consumers. Today it is also grown in several other wine regions both in France and elsewhere.

The Condrieu appellation (AOC / AOP) covers 135 hectares today, up from 12 ha in the 60s. The soil is mainly granite / gneiss. The vineyards are mostly on steep slopes, often terraced, almost tumbling over the Rhone river. It makes full-bodied, aromatic wines with aromas of exotic fruit and flowers.

Chateau Grillet is a separate appellation. It is a very close neighbour and has many similarities, e.g. soil type, lands structure and grape variety. It is sometimes said to be France’s smallest appellation (3.4 ha), but the truthfulness of that statement depends on how you count. For a long time it was the property of the Neyret-Gachet family but was sold in 2011.

How to buy / license a photo

>> Sunday 27 March 2011

How to license a digital image or to buy a print.

There are two ways to purchase images from BKWine Photography, and one way to use images for free in personal blogs. Each has its own specific use:

  • Licensing for professional use
  • Buy prints for personal use or wall decoration
  • Online use through flash embeds (this is explained at the end of this text)

Licensing

You can license a photo for professional use, for example for publishing in magazines or books, or for promotional use.

All images are can be licensed. All images are licensed as “Rights Managed” (RM) photos. (We do not work with so-called Royalty Free (RF) images.)

RM means that you specify the use for the image and pricing is set according to those specification. The image can be used only for what has been specified. Any (ANY!) other use is subject to separate licensing/agreement.

For information, on “Releases”: none of our images have “model release” or “property release”.

Buy print

You can buy prints of any of our images. The prints are produced by a professional photography printing service based in the UK. Shipping is not included in the prices quoted on BKWinePhotography.com.

When you buy a print you can use it solely as a print. This means, for example, that it is not permitted to reprint the image or to use it in any publication. Essentially, you buy the print solely for decoration (or whatever you choose to do with the physical print of the image).

How to buy or license - step by step:

(This looks complicated when described in a text as below. In reality it is a very simple step-by-step process. It is worth underlining again that it is not necessary to have a PayPal account - payment with credit/debit card is just as easy.)

In short, this is how it works:
1) login to your account;
2) select the image(s);
3) specify licensing/print details;
4) put the images in the cart and verify the cart
5) pay with card or with PayPal
6) you will receive an email with download link(s) for the images.

In a bit more detail:
  • Click on Client Login and login with your account

(If this is the first time you visit the site then you will need to create an account. Click on “sign up for a free account”. This will create a “buyer’s account” on Photoshelter. Photoshelter is the online photo library platform BKWine Photography uses.)
  • Go to the “image details page” of the image you want to license/buy.

The “image detail page” is the one with the big size photo on the screen.
  • Click on “License or buy print”, above the image

  • Fill in the details:

Click the “Downloads” tab if you want to license an image for professional use (publishing etc) – you will need to specify the usage details for the image.

Click “Prints” if you want to buy a print – you will need to specify the size (etc) of the print you want.

  • Click on “Add to cart” and continue searching images or on “Add and checkout” if you are done selecting images.
  • Go to the “Cart” (checkout)

Verify that you have the images you want in the cart and that the licensing (or print) details are correct!

  • Click on “checkout

You will be asked for your address details (it’s called “shipping information” but it’s “shipping” only if you buy a print. If you are licensing an image with electronic download then there are of course no shipping involved.)

  • Review your order (once again), select that you agree to terms & conditions and continue to PayPal for payment.

Important: You DO NOT NEED A PAYPAL ACCOUNT. You can pay either directly with credit card OR with a PayPal account.

If you have a coupon code you fill it in here.

  • Complete payment details and do the payment EITHER with credit/debit card OR with PayPal.

Once payment is completed, click on the button “Return to Abako Wine Vision Sarl”.

Abako Wine Vision Sarl is the name of our French photo management and licensing company who, from a contractual point of view, supplies the image.

  • You return to the invoice page on BKWine Photography.

Here you can print the receipt, for your records.

You will also receive email confirmations with the invoice details from both PayPal and BKWine Photography / Abako

  • You will soon receive an email with download links for the images you licensed (if your purchase was licensing)

  • Go to the My Downloads page, following the link in the email and download the image.

The download link is only valid 10 days!

The download link delivers a zip file with the image, an xmp file with image details and a RIGHTS.txt file with the licensing details.

Using photo flash embeds on blogs

There is a third possibility to use our images: using them online through our flash embeds (widgets).

With this method you can embed on a web page a slide show with a selection of our images. This type of use is free, and is mainly intended for use on personal blogs and wine blogs.

The only requirement for this kind of use is that you keep the back-link to the BKWine Photography site that appears under the flash embed.

Here is an example:
"

This is how you do it:
  • Find the slide show that you want to embed. They are all available on the Wine Pictures Blog: http://wine-pictures.blogspot.com/
  • Click on the “share” button on the flash slide show
  • Select the “embed code”
  • Paste the embed code on the page where you want the slide show to appear.
Remember: you MUST keep the back-link and credit text under the flash slide show.

La Setera, Arribes, Castilla y Leon, Spain, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine.

THIS IS ONLY A SELECTION OF SAMPLES. Use the image SEARCH function to find more relevant photos.

La Setera is a small family run wine and cheese farm in Spain, in the tiny village Fornillos de Fermosells in the Zamora region (Castilla y Leon / Castile and Leon). The winery is in Arribes del Duero (or DO Denominacion de Origen Arribes). Arribes del Duero is a long drive west from Valladolid taking you almost to the Portuguese border. The landscape is barren, dry hills, bush vegetation, scattered vineyards, but also spectacular when you get close to the winding Douro river.

La Setera started making cheese in 1993 and wine in 2003. It is run by the Spanish-English couple Sara Groves-Raines and Francisco José (Patxi) Martinez. Bodega La Setera makes only 12,500 bottles of wine per year. The vineyard is planted with vines spaced wide, water is a limited resource. In the tiny winery the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks. Some wines are aged in wooden barrels. La Setera makes red, rose and white wines: La Setera Blanco Malvasia, Rosado, La Setera Tinto Crinaza, Tinto Joven, Tinto Roble (oak aged) and Tinto Roble Seleccion Especial, all sold at very modest price. They also make a sweet wine from merlot (!) grapes. The red and rosado wines are made from the grape vine variety "juan garcia" giving dense wines with a pronounced acidity and good structure. The white wine is made from malvasia grapes.

La Setera is also a "queseria", a cheese making dairy. They produce 5000 goat cheeses per year. The cheese is hand made, stored and aged in a cheese 'aging room'. During the aging process the cheese gains in flavour and gets a hard crust. They also make a blue cheese, Queso Azul.

Chateauneuf-du-Pape village, Rhône, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine.

THIS IS ONLY A SELECTION OF SAMPLES. Use the image SEARCH function to find more relevant photos.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a small village in the southern Rhône Valley in France. It is the most famous and well-known appellation in the south of the Rhône wine region. It also played an important role in the 1930s when the whole system of appellation contrôlée was created.

Literally the village name translates into The Pope's New Palace. In the village there is a ruin of what was once a splendorous palace. It was built as a summer residence for one of the Popes at the time when the popes were based in neighbouring Avignon - in the 1300s.

From an administrative point of view Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a commune in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in south-eastern France. It has just over 2000 inhabitants.

The village is the centre of the wine appellation. It is on a small hilltop surrounded by vineyards. On the top of the hill you can see the ruined palace and from there you have a fabulous view. On a clear day you can see along the Rhône River to Avignon (20 km away) and the top of the Mont Ventoux, the highest mountain in the region.

Many of the wine producers of Chateauneuf wine have their offices and winemaking facilities in the village itself. Many have also opened a shop to sell wines in the centre of the village. There are several restaurants to choose from. The Au Verger du Pape has to be mentioned, located just next to the ruin with a view over the vineyards.

It is, in short, a place not to miss if you travel to the southern part of the Rhône Valley.

Cellier des Princes co-operative, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine.

THIS IS ONLY A SELECTION OF SAMPLES. Use the image SEARCH function to find more relevant photos.

Le Cellier des Princes is the only wine co-operative in the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation in the Rhone Valley in the south of France. You can find them on the Route d’Orange just outside the town of Courthezon. The cooperative dates back to 1924, at the time of the creation of the appellation system.

The cooperative Cellier de Princes brings together 240 winegrowers and represents a total vineyard area of 650 hectares. They produce wines from the appellations Chateauneuf du Pape, Cotes du Rhone (most wine producers in Chateauneuf also make Cotes du Rhone wines), Gigondas, Ventoux etc. They also do some muscat and sparkling wines. As many traditional and bigger producers do they also sell wine “en vrac”: you arrive with your own bottle/tank/container and fill it up at their pump.

The location of the winery is perhaps not the most romantic, along one of the Routes nationals, but you have a beautiful view of the Mont Ventoux at the back. There is a big wine shop where you can stock up on their full range of wines.

The Domaine Roger Sabon is a wine producer in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhône Valley in France. The winery is located almost in the centre of the village of Chateauneuf itself. They have vineyards in the Chateauneuf AOC / AOP with additional land in other appellations in the southern Rhone valley (Cotes du Rhone, Lirac). They make a range of different wines under various cuvée names: Les Olivets, Réserve, Prestige, Le Secret des Sabon, Renaissance…

They use mainly the grenache grape variety and add varying portions of syrah, mourvèdre, cinsaut, terret, counoise, vaccarèse, muscardin vines.

Domaine Roger Sabon in Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a true family domaine. Roger Sabon created the domaine in 1952. His three sons Jean-Jacques, Denis and Gilbert are all involved and now also Julien and Delphine, children of Denis, and Didier Négon, oenologist and married to Séverine, Jean-Jacques’ daughter, work at the domaine. The family has 17 hectares in the appellation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. They also have vineyards of the other side of the river Rhône, in Roquemaure. 12 hectares are in the appellation of Lirac and 6 hectares in Côtes-du-Rhône. They also make some nice and easy-to-drink vin de table from 10 hectares. The aim of the family Sabon is to make wines with a good concentration and the work start in the vineyard with low yields.

Domaine Giraud, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine.

Domaine Giraud is a winery in the village, and appellation, Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhone Valley (France). Sister and brother couple Marie and François Giraud took over this property from their father ten years ago and have today 19 hectares. They have great respect for the appellation and the terroir but have also introduced some modern ideas in the wine making. Destemming, for example, which was not systematically done before. Marie says that the stems (la rafle) give the wine a green taste and harsh tannins. A modern-style chateauneuf with lots of fruit and concentration and a very clean style.

Domaine Giraud is a family vineyard since 40 years back. Marie works with the Vinification and Francois works with the vineyards.

They make three different wine cuvées with various portions of grenache, syrah and mourvedre.
-Tradition
-Les Gallimardes (vieilles vignes)
-La Crau (viellies vignes, 100% grenache)

They are very fond of grenache and their wines all have a big portion of grenache. They make quite modern grenache, with good extraction and lots of fruit.

They debud and sometimes do green harvest in the vineyards. They sometimes go over the vineyards twice to select the grapes when they are at top maturity. They also select the bunches and the grapes both in the vineyards and on a sorting table when they arrive inn the vineyards. They do use a little barrel aging but not too much.

Collioure is a small village on the French Mediterranean coast close to Spain. It was once a fishing village but is now mainly a tourist destination. For a long time it was also a favoured meeting place for artists. It is a charming village on the coast with a protected harbour, a beach in the town centre and many narrow winding roads.

It is also a centre for winemaking. The Collioure appellation makes mainly red wine, but also some rosé and white. The main grape variety is the grenache (noir). There is also some mourvèdre, syrah, carignan, cinsault. The whites are made primarily from grenache blanc and some grenache gris.

Much of the grapes go into making the sweet Vin Doux Naturel. These are not called Collioure. Instead they have the appellation Banyuls, the name of a neighbouring village. The geographic boundaries of the two appellations are the same.

The Collioure village is surrounded by vineyards. It is often amazingly steep slopes, sometimes terraced, sometimes not. The soil is mainly schist (slate). It is very hard work to grow vines here, due to the slopes, to the soil, and also to the heat and lack of water in summer.

It is certainly a very beautiful wine region to visit and you can taste some excellent wines here. In fact, we are not very far from the more famous Catalan region of Priorat, with similar soil and grape varieties, but the wines of Collioure sell for a fraction of the price.

Virtually all vines come from a vine nursery today. Vine nurseries (pepineriestes in French) produce young vines and deliver them to the wine growers.

The nursery men (if you can call them that) start by growing plants for the rootstocks and the scion (the future upper plant). Bar a few exceptions, all vines are grafted: a rootstock of a variety that is not Vitis Vinifera (often called "American", e.g. Vitis Rupestris), carries the scion, the upper, fruit-bearing part that is a Vitis Vinifera of the grape variety that is desired.

At the nursery the two parts are joined together and then planted on a field to grow the initial roots. They are then uprooted and trimmed before they are delivered to the vine grower who plants them in the vineyard to make wine.

There are several other important things that the nursery does, e.g. make sure that the plant material is virus-free and also select the appropriate clones of the varieties to deliver to the buyers.

Perpignan is an interesting city in the south of France

Perpignan is the main city in the region of Roussillon in the south of France. It has around 300,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area. This is most likely where you arrive if you travel from far away and come to explore the wines of this beautiful region. However, you may want to choose a smaller place as base camp if you plan to travel around visiting vineyards.

There is a charming old city with many winding streets and alleys, restaurants and cafés, shops etc. The centre was once encircled by ramparts, only some ruins are left. There is a massive palace called "Palace of the Kings of Majorca" on one of the hills in the city.

The city is not on the coast but travelling less than half an hour east you will reach the beach. along the coast there are several small "fishing" villages, today more dedicated to tourism: Collioure, Banyuls, Port Vendres.

A vine corpse. (Court noue / fanleaf degeneration virus disease, Mas Amiel, Roussillon, France)

Mas Amiel is located near Maury in the beautiful valley Vallée de l'Agly, on the slopes of the Corbieres hills, almost in Fitou. But it is a decidedly Roussillon winery. A big part of their production is the VDN, Vins Doux Naturels, sweet fortified wines, made much like port wine is made. But they also make red "table" wines as well as white wines that are well worth discovering.

Mas Amiel belongs to the French business man, now winemaker, Olivier Decelle. He also owns three wine chateaux in Bordeaux. Mas Amiel is a quite substantial domaine with vineyard land of over 150 hectares. They have a variety of grape varieties planted, grenache, maccabeu, carignan. Grenache is the main grape though.

After the acquisition by Olivier Decelle in the late 90s the winery have been much modernised and the marketing effort (Decelle having made his fortune in retailing) has led to considerabl success in selling the wines. The full range of wines is of high quality. The table wines are quite powervful and somewhat modern in style. The white wines are very clean and refreshing which sometimes surprises people who think that hot climate whites are heavy.

Some of the VDN wines are aged for some time outside in glass jars, demi-johns, exposed to the sun, as is the tradition in this regions. This creates a very curious, distinctive and interesting wine with an oxidised touch. Very original.
