Ribeauvillé is one of the most picturesque villages in Alsace, visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. It is in the Haut-Rhin department in Alsace, between Colmar and Strasbourg. It has a population of around 5000.

As many Alsatian villages and small towns the centre is the main street that is lined with cafés, shops and wine sellers. There are many half timbered houses, often painted in bright colours. On the main street there the belfry tower called the Butchers' Tower stands tall. In the shops along the street you can buy some of the local specialities: patisseries, foie gras, charcuteries etc. They have also a very lively market. If you are lucky you may also see some storks nesting on the rooftops.

Ribeauville lies on the Route de Vin (wine route) which will take you through the vineyards and up the hills in this charming wine region. Ribeauville is home to the well known cooperative wine producer, the "Cave de Ribeauvillé" and also to several individual wineries: Louis Sipp, Kientzler, Trimbach, Gustave Lorentz, and many more.

The Alsace Grand Cru vineyards represent 4 % of the total area of the Alsace wine district. There are 51 different Grand Cru. They vary in size from 3 to 80 hectares.

The four permitted grapes varieties to be used in a Grand Cru are riesling, gewurztraminer, muscat and pinot gris. And Sylvaner is permitted on the Grand Cru Zotzenberg. The Grand Crus of Kaefferkopf and Altenberg de Bergheim are allowed to make blended wines from different grape varieties. There are stricter rules concerning maximum yield, density of plantation and grape maturity for the Grand Crus than for an ordinary Alsace wine.

Some of the famous Grand Cru vineyards in the Alsace wine region include Mambourg in the village of Sigolsheim, the newest addition Kaefferkopf in Ammerschwihr, Zinnkoepfle in Soulizmatt / Westhalten, Pfersigberg in Eguisheim / Wettolsheim, Hengst in Wintzenheim, Brand in Turckheim, Geisberg in Ribeauville, Vorburg in Rouffach / Westhalten, Sommerberg in Niedermorschwihr / Katzenthal, Schlossberg in Kientzheim, Pfersigberg in Eguisheim, Altenberg de Bergbieten and Kastelberg and Wiebelsberg in Andlau.

Eguisheim is a small pretty town just south of Colmar on the Route de Vin in Alsace. It is a pleasure to stroll along its narrow streets with half-timbered houses and to stop in one of the many cafes or restaurants for a glass of Riesling or maybe a tarte flambee or some other gastronomic Alsace speciality.

Eguisheim is home to several well known Alsace wine producers, like Domaine Leon Beyer, Cave Vinicole Wolfberger, Charles Baur, Antoine Meyer, Domaine Bruno Sorg and Domaine Albert Mann.

Eguisheim has two Grand Cru vineyards: Eichberg and Pfersigberg.Eichberg, with a surface of 57.62 hectares, enjoys a warm and dry microclimate with less rain than anywhere else in the Colmar region. The soil and the climate is very well suited for riesling, gewurztraminer and pinot gris. Pfersigberg is a little bit bigger, 74.55 hectares. The exposure is east-south-east and particularly sunny. Gewurztraminer is the main grape on Pfersigberg.

Maison Trimbach is one of the most famous wine producers in Alsace. They have their headquarters in the pretty town of Ribeauvillé in the central part of the wine region of Alsace.

The wine estate was founded already in 1626 and it is still owned and run by the Trimbach family.

The wine domain Trimbach makes several different ranges of wines: Classic, Reserve, Reserve Personelle, Prestige and Collection. They have all the usual Alsace grape varieties planted: riesling, gewürztraminer, pinot gris, muscat, pinot noir and sylvaner. Some of their most sought after wines are the Riesling Cuvee Frederic Emile and, above all, Clos Sainte Hune, a wine from a small vineyard parcel of the Grand Cru Rosacker, planted exclusively with the riesling grape variety in an exceptional soil. The wines of Trimbach are often very dry and pure in style.

Three years ago we discovered this winery when we were researching our book on the Languedoc wines. We asked one of the producers we met if he had any personal recommendations and that's how we got their name! And when we recently re-tasted their wines we can only conclude that their search for perfection continues and makes progress.

The wines are exceptionally well made and very delicious. Roland and Anne-Marie Coustal have 12 ha in the southern part of Minervois. Their first vintage was 2001, after taking over Anne-Marie's family's vineyards. They still do all the work themselves, except for the harvest. A new cuvée is the Et Cetera.

Very good is the Racines. Quintessens 2007 is a 100% syrah, dense structure, long and good complexity on the palate.

Domaine Pierre Frick, a wine producer in the small village of Pfaffenheim in southern Alsace is run by Jean-Pierre Frick and his wife Chantal. The winery was one of the first in France, in 1981, to convert to biodynamic agriculture. Also in the cellar they want to work as naturally as possible. Since 1988 none of their wines have been chaptalized, they use natural yeast and very little sulphur.

The wine estate has 12 hectares in production and they make around 30 different wines, some of them without any sulphur at all. The grapes are riesling, gewürztraminer, sylvaner, pinot noir, muscat and pinot blanc and they also make the late harvest wines typical for the region of Alsace, Vendange Tardive and Sélection Grains Nobles.

All bottles from the Domaine Pierre Frick is closed with a beer bottle cap (crown cap), for Jean-Pierre and Chantal the most perfect closure for an aromatic Alsace wine.

Domaine Marc Kreydenweiss is run by the philosophical gentleman Marc Kreydenweiss. The family has a long tradition of winemaking in Alsace, Marc is the 10th generation. The winery is located in the northern part of central Alsace, in the village of Andlau.

Marc Kreydenweiss was one of the early adopters of organic viticulture. Furthermore, already in the early 90s the vineyards had been converted to biodynamic culture. Kreydenweiss has vineyard parcels in several different locations, including in a number of Grand Crus: Kastelberg, near the village Andlau, Wiebelsberg, and Moenchberg. The vineyards are planted with traditional Alsace grape varieties: riesling, pinot gris, gewurztraminer etc.

In 1999 the Domaine Marc Kreydenweiss bought a vineyard in the southern Rhône valley, in the Costieres de Nimes region where they grow carignan, grenache and syrah grape varieties.

Domaine Louis Sipp, Ribeauville, Alsace, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine.

THIS IS ONLY A SELECTION OF SAMPLES. Use the image SEARCH function to find more relevant photos.

Domaine Louis Sipp is a family owned wine estate in the very pretty tourist-destination village of Ribeauvillé in Alsace in northern France.

The winery traces its history back to the 1920s when Louis sipp bought some vineyards and started to make wine under his own name. (Some of the oak vats that Louis bought to make wine in at the time are still in use today in the cellar!) Today the property is run by Etienne Sipp and Martine Sipp-Kempf.

The vineyards are planted with a mix of grape varieties: riesling, gewurztraminer, tokay pinot gris, pinot noir and some muscat. The total acreage is substantial: 40 hectares, the vast majority in the commune of Ribeauvillé. Most of the vineyards are located on hillsides that can be quite steep here in Alsace. The vineyards are farmed organically with a certification from Ecocert.

Domaine Louis Sipp produces a wide range of wines, starting with a basic varietal range. The top of the range is represented by the Grand Crus (Kirchberg and Osterberg) and by the "single vineyard", or terroir, denominations from Ribeauvillé (Hagel, Steinacker, Rotenberg, Trottacker, Grossberg). They also make sweet vendanges tardives and selection de grains nobles.

The 16 hectares of vineyards are mostly on a south east facing slope and are planted with a variety of Alsatian grape varieties: riesling, gewurztraminer, pinot gris, etc.

Domaine Gerard Neumeyer makes both dry and sweet wines, the sweeter ones being vendanges tardives and selection des grains nobles (SGN). They also make a sparkling crémant d'Alsace. THIS IS ONLY A SELECTION OF SAMPLES. Use the image SEARCH function to find more relevant photos.

"Domaine G Humbrecht et Fils Vins Fins d'Alsace" (as they call themsleves) is a small, family owned and family run wine estate in the pretty village of Pfaffenheim. The winery is in the centre of the village, but it is still just a short walk to get out to the vineyards. The family traces its history among the Alsace wines back to the 17th century. The current generation is headed by Pierre-Paul whose son is taking a more and more active part in the winemaking and development of the winery.

The vineyards on the hill above the village are planted with a variety of grapes: sylvaner, pinot blanc, riesling, muscat, pinot noir, tokay pinot gris (which today has dropped the tokay prefix), and gewurztraminer. The also make a grape variety blend - the famous edelzwicker. G Humbrecht has a small parcel on the Grand Cru Steinert.

The farming of the vineyards is biodynamic, which is a sort of extension of organic farming, based on specific treatments of the soil and the vines. Vinification is done in the winery in the village. It is equipped with both modern stainless steel tanks and vats as well as old wooden foudres (wooden vats). They also have the tools that are needed to make the biodynamic preparations, e.g. a dynamisateur (dynamiser?).

Domaine Frederic Mochel is a family wine estate in the town of Traenheim, in the Alsace wine region in France. The Mochel family has been making wine in Traenheim since 1669.

Their best wine comes from the Grand Cru vineyard Altenberg de Bergbieten where they have 5 hectares of out the grand cru's total of 29 ha. They make wine from seven different grape varieties: sylvaner, pinot blanc (and auxerrois), riesling, pinot gris, gewurztraminer and pinot noir. The Domaine Frederic Mochel has in total 10 ha of vineyards.

They also make what has almost become a rarity, the Alsace Edelzwicker, which is a blend of different grapes. Most Alsatian wines are otherwise bottled as single varietals. They also make one they call Klevner from pinot blanc and the close relative auxerrois (that can be bottled under the pinot blanc name). Another unusual cuvée they make is a wine called Trovium. It is a dry white wine that they have aged in oak barrels.

Domaine André Pfister, Dahlenheim, Alsace, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine.

THIS IS ONLY A SELECTION OF SAMPLES. Use the image SEARCH function to find more relevant photos.

Domaine André Pfister is a family wine estate located in the northern part of Alsace, in Dahlenheim. It is owned by and managed by André and Marie-Anne and their daughter Mélanie. Melanie, with a degree in oenology from Bordeaux and Dijon, is one of several young and talented wine growers and winemakers in Alsace. She is increasingly taking over the responsibility for the vinification and the wines, and experimenting with new techniques to further improve the wines. (One other experiment is that of different closures: different natural corks, Diam cork, plastic, glass Vino-Lok stopper...)

Dahlenheim, where the winery is located, is a small town in the northern part of the Alsace wine region. Being a bit away from the bustling centre of the wine region has its advantages and drawbacks. There are less traffic jams and crowds in summer, but there are perhaps also less visitors coming to the winery. The latter is unfortunate since there are many good wine producers to discover in this part of Alsace too. After the Second World War the vines had almost disappeared (only 42 ha remained) but now the plantings have recovered and Dahlenheim has over 120 ha today.

The vineyards of Domaine Pfister are made up of some 40 different plots, adding to a total of 10 hectares. Not an easy logistics task at harvest time. The main grape variety that they use is riesling (25% of the total) but they have vineyards with virtually every Alsatian variety.

Pfister make a wide range of different wines: white and red, dry and sweet (e.g. vendange tardive), still and sparkling (crémant). They also make two grand cru cuvees from the Engelberg GC: a riesling and a gewurztraminer.

Domaine Aime Stentz is a family wine estate in the village Wettolsheim in Alsace in France. Today it covers some 15 hectares of vineyards. Sometimes they seem to prefer to write they name of the winery as Domaine Aiméstentz. Several people of the family are involved in the winery: Lous Stentz in the vineyards, Etienne Stentz in the wine cellar, Jocelyne Stentz with clients and the restaurant and Fabienne Stentz with foreign clients. The fifth generation Stentz, Marc, is progressively taking over the responsibility for the winemaking.

As many growers in Alsace Stentz makes a wide range of wines. The wines are mainly white of course, ranging from very dry to very sweet vendanges tardives and even selection de grains nobles. They also make smaller quantities of red wine (from pinot noir), rosé, and sparkling (crémant d'alsace). They have a prestige cuvée called Clos du Vicius Romain from the Hengst grand cru vineyard.

Domaine Aime Stentz uses the classic Alsatian grape varieties: sylvaner, riesling, muscat, pinot gris, and gewurztraminer. They are moving towards biodynamic viticulture and plan to become certified in 2011.

Colmar is a small city (or big town) in the heart of the Alsace wine region. It is the capital of the department Haut-Rhin and is sometimes considered as the capital of the wine district too.

Colmar is an excellent base from which to do excursions in the vineyards to discover all the producers in Alsace. It has an old city centre with many beautiful old half-timbered houses. There is a part called Little Venice (Petite Venis) with old canals - an enchanting area for a night time stroll or to have a glass of wine in one of the cafés. It is also called the tanners' district since the canals were once used as water supply to tanneries.

The city is today a very attractive tourism destination with charming hotels and many restaurants. You should not miss trying the local pizza (don't let them know we called it that!) the flammekueche - a delicious, very, very thin dough with various kinds of 'filling' on top. the French word for it is tarte flambée, but it is far from any other kind of tarte. Order one, and then when you're finished you order another and another if you want more.

You should visit the Unterlinden museum with art and local history. There is a beautiful Eglise Saint Martin church, the famous Maison Pfister with carved wood sculptures, Koifhuis (old customs) and many more sights. And of course many occasions to taste the Alsatian wines.

The view from Chateau Rives-Blanques is fantastic: the snow capped tops of the Pyrenees mountain tops. No wonder that Carly and Jan Panman decided to settle here in this majestic environment. Limoux makes a lot of white wines and Rives Blanques makes no reds at all. But they do make several different whites: dry, sparkling (both Blanquette and Crémant) and even sweet (plus a rosé).

The traditional grape variety is mauzac and they use it both for the easy-drinking, apply Blanquette and to the still wine Cuvée Occitania, on of our favourites. With its flowery, apply, refreshing character Occitania shows excellently what mauzac can do on its own with skilful winemaking - exactly what Jan and Caryl wanted with this cuvée. Another wine to mention in their range is La Trilogie, made from the three grapes chardonnay, chenin blanc, and mauzac.

J Portugal Ramos has become perhaps THE poster boy of Alentejo wineries. He evidently has a talent for marketing. The winery is located on a hill near the town of Estremoz. It is probably one of the bigger producers in Alentejo. Some of the wine making technology is decidedly traditional, e.g. the use of stone lagares for treading the grapes (although we're not sure how much they are actually used). They also have many modern stainless steel fermentation vats, roto-fermenters for an efficient extraction, oak fermentation vats, and a big barrel aging cellar of maturing the wines in wood. They have been extremely successful on the Swedish market, partially thanks to an aggressive pricing strategy for the wines on that market.

Herdade do Peso is a winery in the Alentejo wine region to the east of Lisbon in Portugal (in Pedrógão, in the Vidigueira district). It is since 1997 one of the wineries in the portfolio of Sogrape, one of Portugal's biggest wine producers. The property has 110 hectares of vineyards on a total acreage of 465 ha. In addition to vines, there are extensive plantings of olive trees.

The vineyards are planted across a gently rolling landscape where one can also see various fruit trees. The grape varieties used in the vineyards are for examples aragones, trincadeira and alfrocheiro.

Sogrape has built a modern vinification centre at the Peso property to vinify a range of different wines. It begins with Vinha do Monte (which was made even before the acquisition of Herdade do Peso, from bought grapes). The wine is a blend of traditional grape varieties. There is a premium range of wines called simply Herdade do Peso. They are single variety wines from trincadeira, alfrocheiro and aragones. In 2001 they launched a top-of-the-range Reserva 1999.

Herdade de Sao Miguel is a winery located in Portugal's Alentejo wine region to the east of Lisbon. It is in the Redondo area close to the historic town of Evora. Since 1997 Herdade de São Miguel is owned by Alexandre Relvas.

The Sao Miguel farm covers some 175 hectares 35 of which are planted with vines. There are also cows and sheep, as well as cork and olive trees on the farm.

The vineyard plantings are quite recent: the vines were planted between 2001 and 2003. The vineyards are planted with a variety of mainly local traditional grape varieties. For the red wines there are e.g. alicante bouschet, aragones, castelao and touriga franca, but also the international grape varieties cabernet sauvignon and syrah. For the white wines they have planted antao vaz, arinto, avesso, enruzado and several other varieties.

The winery and wine cellar is very modern. It was built in 2003 and is equipped with the latest vinification technology: stainless steel vats, pneumatic press etc, but also traditional barrels.

Herdade Sao Miguel makes a range of wines under the names of Sao Miguel, Sao Miguel Descbridores, Montinho SM, Ciconia, Missoes, and a "Special Edition".

Herdade das Servas winery is in the Alentejo wine region in Portugal. It is a very quality conscious producer with some 200 hectares of vineyards. It is not far from the town of Estremoz. The winemaker, Tiago Garcia, has introduced many modern techniques but is also continuing old traditions. One example in the winery is the lagares. The grapes used to be trodden by foot but the modern lagares have pneumatic feet to increase extraction. Some of the wines are aged in oak barrels. They make a range of white, rosé and red wines.
