The vineyard at the Great Wall (Hua Xia) Winery in China. It is so cold in winter that the vines have to be covered with earth. The vines are trained on wires, concrete, rather than wooden, poles are used.
Read more... Some old vines, Cabernet Sauvignon, with winter pruning finished. Viña Portal del Alto in Maipo Valley, Chile.
Viña Portal del Alto is situated in the Maipo Valley, one hour drive from Santiago. It is owned by Alejandro Hernández, a well-known oenology professor who has educated many of the Chilean winemakers. One of his interesting wines is a Late Harvest made from Muscat and Sauvignon Blanc.
Sun setting over the vineyard, Bodega Altair in Región del Maule, Chile.
A brand new winery. The first vintage, 2002, will be released in a few months time. Altair is a joint venture between the famous Dassault family of France (they own Château Dassault in Saint-Emilion among other things) and the big Chilean winery San Pedro. 70 hectares is planted, mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery is close to the mountains with a cool climate and a long growing season. This gives elegance to the wines, but they also have fabulous concentration and structure.
A view over the vineyard. Even in winter the grass is green between the rows.Viña San Pedro in Región del Maule, Chile.
Viña San Pedro is the second largest wine producer in Chile. They produce 3 million cases every year of their basic wine, Gato Cabernet Sauvignon. In total they own over 4000 hectares of vineyards and around the winery in Molina they have a single plot of 1200 hectares. The best wine from San Pedro is the prestigious Cabo de Horno and in between this wine and Gato we find three ranges of wines: 35 South, the Castillo de Molina and 1865. Impressive quality all over.

Jorge L. Balduzzi, the owner and general manager and Alejandro Soto Araya of Corfo. Viña Balduzzi in Región del Maule, Chile.
The third generation of this Italian family from Piedmonte is now managing Viña Balduzzi, They were among the first to discover the exceptional conditions of the Maule Valley. The grapes are grown organically and are all handpicked. The Sauvignon Blanc is exceptional with the typical aromas of the grape. The vin de prestige, Gran Balduzzi, is made from grapes planted in 1974 (which makes them old by Chilean standard), picked very late, carefully vinified and aged 16 months in French oak. The result is a rich and concentrated wine with dark chocolate and coffee on the nose.

Terranoble in the Maule Valley made their first vintage in 1994. It is a relatively small winery, around 100 hectares, and the philosophy is to find the right terroir for each grape variety. The yields are small; the grapes are picked by hand and the oak is used to balance the wine, not to overpower it. Their “star” variety is Carmenère, which shows a lovely spicy and fruity nose and a good balance and length.
Pruning is done in July at Viña San Rafael and the Via Wine Group in Región del Maule, Chile.
This group started its wine business in 1998 and now has 1358 hectares in four valleys: Casablanca, Colchagua, Curicó and Maule. Michel Laroche in Chablis has a joint venture with the group and is involved in making some of their wines. VIA offers a broad range of very good wines, e.g. easy-to-drink-wines from the Oveja Negra (Black Sheep)-label and more powerful and spicy wines from the Chilensis-label (which also has an extremely elegant label).
