It is situated a short distance north of the village Saint Emilion. Chateau Grand Corbin Despagne is today managed by the owner / winemaker Francois Despagne. The vineyards cover some 26 hectares, mainly on sand and clay soil. The grape varieties used are for the most part merlot, with some cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and malbec. The winery is equipped with both stainless steel tanks and concrete vats. All are temperature controlled during the vinification. At harvest the grapes are sorted by hand after having been destemmed, before they are crushed and the fermentation starts.

Why they stack bottles the way they do

>> Saturday, 24 October 2009

This shows that if you stack the bottles the way they do in the cava cellars (and also in Champagne) it does not matter if one bottle in the big pile breaks, or for that matter if someone happens to pull out a bottle in the middle of the pile.

Bottles aging in the cellar. One bottle broken, exploded. Vallformosa, Vilobi, Penedes, Catalonia, Spain.

-

Vallformosa winery stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine.

Vallformosa is a family owned winery in Vilobí del Penedès, in the DO Penedes, in Catalonia in the north-eastern part of Spain. Their main production is the sparkling wine, cava, made with similar processes as in Champagne, e.g. a second fermentation in bottle. But they also make red, white and rosé wine. They have a total 400 hectares of vineyards. At the winery you can see some curioius old wooden fermentation vats, several hundred years old. It is a mid-sized winery, much smaller than the behemoths Freixenet and Codorniu, but still substantial in size. The second fermentation of the sparkling cava wine is made in bottle and the bottles are aged a certain time before the sediment is removed by the turning, "riddling", today done in automatic 'girasols' (gyropalette, giropalette).

Is it OK to use photographs in magazine's web archives without paying the photographer?

>> Friday, 23 October 2009

According to a recent court decision the answer is: no.

Unless it has explicitly been agreed, a magazine cannot simply make available online electronic versions of its publication without paying a licens fee for the photographs in the magazine. (One would assume that the same thing goes for the texts and the journalists.)

This is the conclusion of a recent British court ruling in a dispute between the photographer Alan Grisbrook and MGN Ltd, published on Swan Turton Solicitors' web site:

COMMERCIAL USE OF PHOTOGRAPHS ON ARCHIVE WEBSITE INFRINGES PHOTOGRAPHER’S COPYRIGHT: GRISBROOK v MGN LTD

A very interesting read.

Swan Turton concludes with three points

"1. All parties, but especially licensees, should confirm in writing the terms of the licence they obtain to avoid the risk of subsequent disappointment at the court’s narrow interpretation of the licence. Basically if, as a licensee, you want more rights than the bare minimum, confirm it in a written agreement signed by the parties or risk being sued for copyright infringement.

2. Photographers, image libraries and other owners of copyright material should regularly check the uses to which their licensees are putting their material. If your licensees are using your material in ways which were not contemplated by the parties at the time the licence was entered into and in ways which are not covered by any written or other agreement, then you may well have a claim in copyright infringement.

3. Any photographer (or image library) who has licensed images to a newspaper which, like MGN, now appears to be making back copies of their editions available online to paid subscribers, may well, following this case, have a claim in copyright infringement if their licence agreement did not clearly allow such use."

You should read the full text to understand what this really means.

Very interesting!

Greece Macedonia Wine & Vineyards Stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine.

Macedonia is a region in Northern Greece, bordering to Macedonia-FYROM and Albania. It is one of the premier quality wine regions in Greece. It has seen many young and ambitious winemakers bringing established wineries to new levels or by creating new vineyards. There are several different wine producing sub-regions. The most famous vineyards are perhaps in Naoussa. One should not forget Drama, Amyntaio, Kaval, Epanomi and others. Most wine is red, often made from local indigenous varieties. Some traditional grape varieties that we find here are xinomavro, malagousia, agiorghitiko, mavrodaphne for red and for white wine assyrtiko, malagousia, moschofilero and roditis...

Some of the best known quality wine producers are: Alpha Estate, Ktima Pavlidis, Wine Art Estate, Ktima Kir-Yianni Estate, the Amytaion Co-operative (also making much rosé and sparkling), Domaine Gerovassiliou, Ktima Biblia Chora, and the Boutaris Winery, to mention just a few. There is also a small vineyard run by the Tsantali winery on the famed monastic peninsula Mont Athos.

Tsipouro is another local drink, a distilled spirit flavoured with aniseed, much like the French pastis (anisée) and ouzo.

Topping up. Oak barrel aging and fermentation cellar. Mas Igneus, Gratallops, Priorato, Catalonia, Spain.

-

Mas Igneus, Priorat, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine.

Mas Igneus is a vineyard and winery located near Gratallops in Priorat (Priorato), Catalonia, in north eastern Spain. It was founded in 1996 as a joint venture between Josep Maria Albet of the Catalan winery Albet I Noya, and Josep Maria Pujol-Busquets. The vineyards are cultivated organically and are certified as an organic winery. The modern wine cellar has an original architecture by alfons Soldevila. The vineyards extend over 11 hectares, are planted with garnatxa negra (grenache) and carinyena (carignan), plus some syrah, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Most of the soil is the typical slate (schist) llicorella. They make several different red and white wines: e.g. Costers, Igneus FA206, Barranc.

Winding road, terraced vineyards. Priorato, Catalonia, Spain

-

Catalonia Priorat, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine.

Priorat (or Priorato) is a small wine region in Catalonia, in the province of Tarragona. It is notable for its high altitude vineyards grown on very poor soil in hot and arid climate. A typical terroir is the slate (schist) llicorella. A few decades ago a handful of pioneering winemakers settled in this almost forgotten corner of Spain and started to produce outstanding wines. The wines are very powerful, generally high in alcohol. Common grape varieties are cariñena (carinyena, carignan), garnacha (garnatxa, grenache), cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah, samso and others. The capital of the region is Falset but from a wine point of view Gratallops is the focal point. It is a mountainous wine region with narrow winding roads and terraced vineyards, often difficult to cultivate. Some of the most famous wineries / wine producers are Clos Mogador, Costers del Siurana / Clos de l’Obac, Scala Dei, Mas Igneus, Buil I Gine, Rene Barbier, Alvaro Palacios…

Roto-fermenters. Tsantali Vineyards & Winery, Halkidiki, Macedonia, Greece.

-

Greece Macedonia Tsantali Winery, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine.

The Tsantali Agios Pavlos winery is located in northern Greece, in Macedonia, not far from Thessaloniki in Halkidiki. Tsantali is the biggest wine producer in Greece and has vineyards across the country. The wine production is indeed large scale. The winery has a substantial park of fermentation tanks, a whole row of (relatively) modern roto-fermentaters (rotating fermentation extraction tanks), and a large underground cellar for aging the wine in barrel.

They are also a big producer of the aniseed (anis) flavoured spirit tsipouro (similar to pastis / ouzo, or grappa, if without the anis flavour). the distillery is equipped with several shining distillation pots.

San Barthomieu i Santa Tecla church. At night. The coast walk. Sitges, Catalonia, Spain

-

Sitges, Catalonia, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine.

Sitges is a good place to stay when you explore Catalan wine regions. (It's located just 35 kilometres south of Barcelona.) Don't choose Barcelona - it'll take ages to get out of and in to the city. Sitges, on the other hand, has easy access to most wine regions, Penedes of course but also (within an hour or two drive) Priorat, Monsant, Costers del Segre... It's not in the middle of the vineyards but they're not far away. It's beautifully located on the coast, easy access to the airport and plenty of hotels and restaurants.

It also has many tourist attractions. The beach, of course, with a beautiful beach walk all along the sea; the church San Barthomieu i Santa Tecla; museum Museu Maricel de Mar; Museu Romantic "Can Llopis" and much more. It has a bit of a reputation for being a holiday destination for gay men and lesbinas, but that is not really anything that you notice much when visiting. It is equally a very popular family holiday destination.

If you're lucky you might experience the carnival (in February and March) or a competition between teams trying to build the highest "human tower" (castell) - a genuinely Catalan sport.

Codorníu is one of the biggest Spanish producers of sparkling wine - cava. Some claim it is the world's largest producer of sparkling wine. The winery is located in Sant Sadurni d'Anoya in Penedes in Catalonia in north eastern Spain. The sparkling wine is made by what used to be called the Champagne method, but that now must be called the traditional method with second fermentation in bottle. There are millions of bottles aging in the cellar. Many buildings at the winery are designed in the original Catalonian 'modernista' style. The architect, Josep Puig i Cadalfach, was one of the leading figures of the late 19th century movement.

Torres winery, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine.

Torres is one of the precursors of Spanish quality wine and of the development of international markets for Spanish wines. They are today producing wines in three different continents. The roots though are firmly placed in Catalonia, in Vilafranca del Penedes in north eastern Spain, where they also have a big winery. They own 1300 hectares of vineyard. The production is large scale and very modern. They have been experimenting with many different grape varieties, e.g. the internationally popular cabernet sauvignon (e.g. in Mas la Plana, previously known as Gran Coronas Black Label), chardonnay, gewurztraminer and many more. But they are also keen to preserve local traditional grape varieties.

The Albet family have been making wine in Penedes since the early 20th century. Since 1979 the two brothers Josep Maria and Antoni Albet i Noya run the wine business together. The same year marked their conversion to organic (ecologic) agriculture. They make high class Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon wines and also experiment with almost forgotten and disappeared Catalonian grape varieties in collaboration with Torres. The winery is located near Sant Pau d'Ordal in Catalonia. The vineyards cover an area of 76 hectares. In the winery they produce both red, white and sparkling wines. Some cuvees are aged in oak barrel. They also experiment with the curious egg-shaped concrete fermentation tanks.
