Talk about terroir

Some say "terroir" is all, some say it is nothing (like Malcolm Gluck of SuperPlonk fame in his latest book) . One part of terroir is the soil - but the soil is not all. Here's an example from Chablis in Burgundy:
A cross section of the soil on the grand cru hill: a thin topsoil and then Kimmeridge - limestone and clay.
