The Alsace Grand Cru vineyards represent 4 % of the total area of the Alsace wine district. There are 51 different Grand Cru. They vary in size from 3 to 80 hectares.
The four permitted grapes varieties to be used in a Grand Cru are riesling, gewurztraminer, muscat and pinot gris. And Sylvaner is permitted on the Grand Cru Zotzenberg. The Grand Crus of Kaefferkopf and Altenberg de Bergheim are allowed to make blended wines from different grape varieties. There are stricter rules concerning maximum yield, density of plantation and grape maturity for the Grand Crus than for an ordinary Alsace wine.
Some of the famous Grand Cru vineyards in the Alsace wine region include Mambourg in the village of Sigolsheim, the newest addition Kaefferkopf in Ammerschwihr, Zinnkoepfle in Soulizmatt / Westhalten, Pfersigberg in Eguisheim / Wettolsheim, Hengst in Wintzenheim, Brand in Turckheim, Geisberg in Ribeauville, Vorburg in Rouffach / Westhalten, Sommerberg in Niedermorschwihr / Katzenthal, Schlossberg in Kientzheim, Pfersigberg in Eguisheim, Altenberg de Bergbieten and Kastelberg and Wiebelsberg in Andlau.
