Herdade do Esporão is a big winery located 180 km east of Lisbon in the Alentejo wine region in Portugal. It is in the sub-region Reguengos de Monsaraz. The current winery is relatively recent, built in 1987. The winery is equipped with modern vinification equipment, including stainless steel fermentation tanks, temperature control, cap submerging devises and much more. There are also extensive cask cellars where the wine is aged in oak barrels for maturation.
The vineyards of Herdade de Esporao extend over more than 600 ha. The plantings are a mix of traditional Portuguese vine varieties and 'international' varieties.
A distinctive feature of the vineyard is the Tower of Esporao that dates back to the 15th century. t is believed to have been built by Morgado Alvaro Mendes de Vasconcelos and features prominently on the labels of several of the wines.
The Herdade do Esporao winery produces several different ranges of wines: Esporao, Vinha da Defesa, Monte Velho, Alandra, Monocastas and Outros. They make both red wine and white wines and rosé.
